Iron Gates Natural Park, Natural park in southwestern Romania
The Iron Gates Natural Park extends over 115,655 hectares along the Danube River, forming a natural border between Romania and Serbia.
The protected area received official designation in 2000 through national legislation, incorporating eighteen distinct reserves within its boundaries.
The natural park contains diverse ethnic communities including Serbian, Czech, Roma, Hungarian, and German populations living alongside Romanian inhabitants.
Visitors can explore marked hiking trails, conduct scientific research, or participate in guided tours after obtaining necessary permits from park administration.
The park contains the longest gorge in Europe, stretching 134 kilometers along the Danube River with limestone cliffs reaching heights of several hundred meters.
