Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Baroque cathedral in Blaj, Romania.
The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is a baroque church in the center of Blaj, a small city in Alba County, Romania. It has two towers on its front facade and an interior decorated with ornamental details typical of baroque religious architecture.
The cathedral was built between 1741 and 1749, designed by architect Anton Erhard Martinelli. In 1838, almost a century after its completion, the building was given the two towers that now define its front facade.
The cathedral is the seat of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church and draws worshippers from across the region for major feasts and ceremonies. Visitors who attend a service can hear the liturgy sung in Romanian, which gives the space a distinct character rooted in local religious tradition.
The cathedral is close to the center of Blaj and easy to reach on foot from the main streets. The open area around the building gives visitors a clear view of the facade and towers from different angles.
Although Blaj is a small city, this cathedral functions as the mother church of the entire Romanian Greek Catholic community, giving it a standing far beyond what its size might suggest. It is often referred to as a religious center of national weight, which surprises many visitors who expect to find it in a larger city.
