Densuş-Ciula Formation, Geological formation in Hunedoara County, Romania.
Densuş-Ciula Formation is a layered rock sequence in Hunedoara County made up of three main sections stacked on top of each other: lower volcanic material, middle mudstones and sandstones, and upper red conglomerates. Walking through the site reveals how these different rock types were deposited one after another over time.
This formation dates from the Late Cretaceous period when the area was a paleoisland with its own ecosystem. The rock layers accumulated as environmental conditions shifted and different sediments were deposited across the region.
Scientists from multiple countries conduct research at the formation to study the preserved remains of ancient species that inhabited the prehistoric Hațeg Island.
Visiting this formation requires some preparation since it sits in a mountainous area and is best explored with experienced local guides. Sturdy footwear and caution on uneven terrain are important for safe exploration.
This formation contains fossils of flying reptiles, including Hatzegopteryx, which rank among Europe's largest flying creatures. These giant flying reptiles reveal that the isolated island supported diverse habitats and ecosystems.
