Old St. Eleftherios Church, Orthodox church in Bucharest, Romania.
Old St. Eleftherios Church is an Orthodox house of worship in Bucharest with a cross-shaped floor plan, a porch, and a bell tower. The building sits on a corner lot in the Old Town area with its own quiet character.
This church was built between 1741 and 1744 on marshy ground near the Dambovita River and marked an important moment in Bucharest's religious architecture. In 1867 it was remodeled in Greek Revival style, giving it a new appearance.
The church is named after Saint Eleftherios and displays features from the 19th century that show how it evolved toward Greek Revival style. You can see how the community has maintained and used this space over generations.
The church sits on Sfantul Elefterie Street in the Old Town center and welcomes visitors during regular hours. The location is easily walkable and reaches you from the main streets that cross this neighborhood.
The building has survived several major earthquakes, including severe tremors in 1802, 1838, 1940, and 1977, which required extensive restoration work. This resilience shows how well the original construction was built to endure over more than 270 years.
