Bucharest, Capital city in southeastern Romania.
Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania on the banks of the Dâmbovița. The urban area spreads across flat terrain with wide boulevards, residential blocks from different decades and office districts, while parks, markets and public squares open up between the streets.
The city was founded in the 15th century as a fortress and grew slowly until it became the capital in 1862. Large building projects in the 20th century changed the cityscape considerably and erased many older neighborhoods.
Restaurants and cafes on the sidewalks fill up late in the evening when locals go out after work and eat outside. Street musicians and booksellers gather in the old town where people stroll through the alleys and walk into small theaters or bars.
The center is easy to walk through but the outer districts are spread far apart and require public transport. Metro and buses run until late in the evening with some lines operating all night.
In a neighborhood to the north you can see small wooden houses with gardens that look like village homes even though they stand in the middle of the big city. This area is inhabited by residents and feels like a time capsule from another era.
