Bellu Cemetery, Historic cemetery in Șerban Vodă district, Romania
Bellu is a cemetery in the Șerban Vodă district of Bucharest, Romania, covering a large area. Paths wind between mausoleums, stone sculptures, and memorials created by Romanian craftsmen.
Baron Barbu Bellu transferred the land to the Bucharest administration in 1858, creating what became the largest cemetery in Romania. Over the following decades, many grave monuments and the central chapel were added.
Visitors find graves of well-known actors, politicians, and scientists grouped in separate sections. The layout shows how important social roles were when planning this resting place.
The cemetery is open daily and main paths are well marked. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are extensive.
The chapel at the center was designed in the 1880s after the cathedral in Karlovy Vary. Inside, wall paintings by Romanian artists show religious scenes and decorative patterns.
