Roman Arena, Concert hall in Carol Park, Bucharest, Romania.
The Roman Arena is an open-air concert venue built in a stone amphitheater shape inside Carol Park in Bucharest. Tiered rows of seating curve around a central stage area at the bottom, with space for around 5,000 people.
The arena was built in 1906 as part of a national exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of King Carol I's reign. Architect Leonida Negrescu and engineer Elie Radu designed the stone structure, drawing on classical amphitheater forms.
The Roman Arena sits inside Carol Park, where concerts draw crowds that spread across the tiered stone seating on warm evenings. The open-air setting means the sound carries through the trees, giving each show a particular feel that indoor venues cannot offer.
Carol Park is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding neighborhoods, and the arena sits close to the main park paths. Arriving a little before showtime is a good idea, since seating is open and earlier guests tend to get the better spots.
Although the structure is over a century old, it was never fully rebuilt, so the original stonework from 1906 is still visible throughout. This makes it one of the few concert spaces in southeastern Europe where the early 20th-century fabric has survived largely intact.
