Elisabeta Palace, Royal palace in Bucharest, Romania
The Elisabeta Palace is a historic building in Bucharest that blends Moorish arches and ornamentation with Romanian elements of Brâncovenesc style. Its facade displays finely carved stonework, while the interiors feature carved wooden ceilings and decorative ceramic tiles.
Duiliu Marcu designed the palace in 1936 as a residence for Princess Elisabeth of Romania, daughter of King Ferdinand. After the bombing of the main royal palace in 1944, it served temporarily as a residence for King Michael I.
The palace takes its name from Elisabeth of Greece and continues to host receptions and ceremonies for the Romanian royal family. Its interiors display a collection of artworks and furniture gathered by the royal family across generations.
The palace can only be visited through organized tours that must be booked in advance. Tours provide access to ceremonial halls and exhibition rooms with royal collections.
A flagpole on the roof displays the personal standards of royal family members only when they are present in the palace. This tradition follows royal etiquette and signals to visitors when a member of the royal family occupies the building.
