Stadionul Steaua, Multi-purpose sports venue in Sector 2, Romania.
Stadionul Steaua is a multi-purpose sports venue in Sector 2, Bucharest, Romania, with a retractable roof and more than 55,000 seats. The arena combines modern architecture with functional facilities and serves as the main stage for football matches and other large events in the capital.
The facility was built between 2008 and 2011 on the site of the former Lia Manoliu Stadium and was designed for international competitions. A few years after completion it hosted matches of the 2020 European Football Championship, which took place a year later due to the pandemic.
The venue carries the name of one of Romania's most famous football clubs, linking sport with national identity. On match days the stands fill with supporters singing and waving flags, while the open or closed roof creates a particular mood depending on the weather.
Access is provided by Piața Muncii metro station and several bus, trolleybus and tram lines nearby. On event days it is advisable to arrive earlier, as the surrounding area becomes busy and queues at the entrance may form.
The roof can fully open or close in around 15 minutes, which is useful when weather changes during an event. The arena received the highest UEFA category classification, qualifying it to host finals of major competitions.
