Construction began in 1586 under logofăt Dan during Mihnea Turcitul's reign, with subsequent renovations between 1632-1654, 1678-1688, and 1966-1967.
The interior walls contain original 16th-century paintings that depict armașul Marcu, connecting the structure to Romanian medieval artistic traditions.
The church remains active for religious ceremonies and visitors can access the site to observe its historical architecture and medieval wall paintings.
The building served as Romania's first mental health hospital from 1839 to 1920, including treating poet Mihai Eminescu with mercury-based procedures.
