Mănăstirea Mărcuța, Orthodox monastery in eastern Bucharest, Romania.
Mănăstirea Mărcuța is a monastery complex in Bucharest featuring fortified walls, a central church dedicated to Saints Michael and Gabriel, and multiple surrounding buildings arranged around the main structure. The entire complex preserves its historic layout along with original wall paintings from the 16th century inside the buildings.
The monastery was founded in 1587 during Mihnea Turcitul's reign and takes its name from a historical figure of that period. Over the centuries the structure underwent various renovations and adaptations, reflecting its ongoing importance to the city.
The interior walls display fragments of religious paintings from the 16th century showing Orthodox Christian scenes and historical figures of that era. These artworks allow visitors to see the spiritual beliefs and artistic style of the period.
The monastery is located at Igreja Mărcuța Street 8 in Sector 2 of Bucharest, easily found near Lake Fundeni in a residential area. It is accessible by foot or public transport and sits close to local services and green spaces nearby.
From 1839 to 1920 this site housed the first psychiatric institution in Wallachia, where patients received medical treatment using methods of that era. The poet Mihai Eminescu was among the notable patients who received care at this facility.
