Cheile Șușarei, Nature reserve in Munții Locvei region, Romania.
Cheile Șușarei is a nature reserve featuring a two-tiered waterfall set within a densely forested valley with limestone cliffs. The stream drops about 7 meters then 9 meters through narrow rock passages surrounded by thick woodland.
During the Austro-Hungarian era the valley was developed as a tourist destination with a carriage road, a lodge with restaurant facilities, and a recreational lake with boat services. This infrastructure shows the area attracted visitors over a century ago.
The name reflects the valley's role as a traditional passage and resting place for travelers. Today visitors can still trace old paths that show how people once moved through this terrain.
The hiking trail is marked with blue crosses starting from the southern end of Sasca Montana and takes about ninety minutes to reach the main features. The valley provides natural shade and access to fresh water, so sturdy footwear and time for breaks are important.
The valley shelters a rare endemic crayfish species found only in these clear mountain streams. This creature is so specialized to its habitat that it exists nowhere else in the world.
