Fortified Lutheran church of Mălâncrav

The fortified Lutheran church in Mälâncrav features three naves, a polygonal chancel, and a western tower. Defense walls and structures built in the 15th century surround the entire building.

Construction began in the 14th century as a Romanesque basilica for the local community. In the 15th century, craftsmen added defense structures to protect the building from attacks.

The wall paintings inside tell biblical stories and once served as visual lessons for visitors who could not read. These artworks have been part of the community's religious life for centuries.

The church is located in the village and is easily reached on foot or by car. Planned visits with local guides help you understand the architecture and artworks better.

Inside sits one of the region's oldest Gothic winged altars with the Mother of God at its center. The church pews display fine carvings made by the craftsman Johann Reychmut.
