Bethlen Castle, Renaissance castle in Criș, Romania
Bethlen Castle is a fortress with four corner towers and high defensive walls surrounding a central courtyard showing Renaissance features. The building has a rectangular layout that provided both protection and a space to display the family's status.
The original structure was built in the 14th century by the Bethlen family, but major renovations and expansions occurred during the 16th and 17th centuries. These periods of change reflect how the castle's role evolved over time.
The courtyard has arcaded passages with carved details that show how wealthy families of the time designed their homes. These arches and ornaments represent what Renaissance style meant to Transylvanian nobility.
Visitors can enter through the main gate and arrange guided tours in several languages with advance notice. Comfortable shoes are a good idea since exploring the outer walls and courtyard involves some walking.
One section stands out: the arcaded wing built in 1599 that still displays stonework from that era. A carved monogram from 1598 on one of the stones marks the names of those who led the project.
