Historic Centre of Sighișoara, Medieval fortified town in Transylvania, Romania
The Historic Centre of Sighișoara is a medieval fortified settlement built on a steep plateau with defensive walls and gothic structures. The old town rises above the Tarnava River with narrow cobblestone streets connecting houses that span from the 13th century onward.
German merchants and craftsmen founded this settlement in the 13th century under Hungarian rule to defend Transylvania's border. The town grew into a trading hub and maintained its defensive structures through the following centuries.
Nine defensive towers still stand as reminders of medieval guild power, with each structure connected to the craftsmen who built and protected them. Walking through the streets, you see how these towers shaped where people lived and worked in the town.
Early mornings or late afternoons offer the best experience with fewer visitors on the steep streets. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip since the cobblestone pathways climb sharply uphill.
The Clock Tower holds mechanical figures that emerge from its facade at midnight for a brief performance. Standing about 64 meters (210 feet) tall, it offers sweeping views across the red tile roofs and winding lanes below.
