The Fortified Church of Prejmer

The Fortified Church of Prejmer is a Gothic-style church surrounded by tall stone walls that form a defensive perimeter. The structure contains multiple levels with storage chambers and residential quarters that allowed families to shelter inside the fortified complex.

Construction began in the 13th century as a defensive stronghold for the region. Over the following centuries, the structure was expanded and continuously used by the community to withstand raids and attacks.

The church served as the spiritual center where villagers gathered for worship and protection during invasions. The spaces within the walls reflect how the community used prayer and faith alongside practical defense to face external threats.

The church is open to visitors who should allow enough time to explore the multiple levels and chambers throughout the complex. Guided visits are recommended to better understand the layout and how the different spaces functioned.

The walls still show visible marks and carvings where families etched their names to identify their personal storage rooms. These scratches and markings offer a tangible connection to the people who once lived and sheltered there.
