Construction of the cathedral began in 1800 under Bishop Ignatius Darabant, replacing a smaller Greek-Catholic church that existed since the 1730s.
The cathedral returned to the Greek Catholic Romanian Church in 2005 after functioning as a regular parish church for several decades.
Located at Strada Iuliu Maniu 1, the cathedral maintains regular hours for religious services and welcomes visitors throughout the week.
The tower's current spire, designed by architect Kálmán Rimanóczy Jr, replaced previous versions destroyed by fires in 1836 and 1907.
