Justiniana Prima, Archaeological site near Leskovac, Serbia
The archaeological remains of Justiniana Prima extend across three distinct sections: the Acropolis, Upper City, and Lower City, covering 10 hectares within stone fortifications.
Emperor Justinian I established this Eastern Roman city in 535 CE as the capital of the Archbishopric of Justiniana Prima, but it fell to Avar and Slavic invasions by 615.
Eight basilicas, thermal baths, and circular squares characterize this early Byzantine settlement, reflecting the fusion of Roman urban planning with Christian architecture.
Visitors can explore the excavated foundations of churches, fortification walls, and water systems through designated pathways across the archaeological site.
The city maintained a complex water infrastructure with a 17-kilometer aqueduct system that supplied water to public fountains and thermal baths throughout the settlement.
