Petkovica monastery, Orthodox monastery in Ležimir, Serbia
Petkovica monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Ležimir, on the slopes of the Fruška Gora mountain in Serbia, listed as a protected cultural monument of exceptional importance. It consists of a stone church and several surrounding structures built in the medieval Serbian style.
The monastery was founded in the early 17th century and fell into disrepair several times over the following centuries before being rebuilt by the Serbian Orthodox community. It is one of several monasteries on Fruška Gora that have played a religious role since the medieval period.
The monastery is dedicated to Saint George, and its feast day draws pilgrims from across the region who gather in the courtyard and church. The interior holds old frescoes and religious objects that visitors can see during a visit.
The monastery is open year-round, and the warmer months make it easier to walk the grounds and explore the surrounding area. Visitors should keep in mind that modest dress is expected when entering the church and monastic spaces.
Fruška Gora holds over a dozen Orthodox monasteries within a short distance of each other, and Petkovica is one of the less visited among them, making it noticeably quieter than its more famous neighbors. The forested slopes around the monastery fall within a national park that covers the entire mountain range.
