Ćelije Monastery

Ćelije Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Lelić standing on the left bank of the Gradac River, featuring a church with a nine-sided dome supported by thick walls and characteristic rising arches. The complex includes a bell tower built in 1926 as part of its overall structure.

The monastery was founded in the 13th century under Stephen Dragutin of Serbia and endured multiple destructions and reconstructions during the Ottoman period between the 15th and 19th centuries. These phases of renewal shaped its present appearance.

The monastery houses a specialized icon-painting school for nuns, continuing traditional artistic methods of Serbian Orthodox religious art since 1966. Visitors can observe the nuns at their detailed handwork and learn about this living artistic tradition.

The monastery sits roughly 10 kilometers southwest of Valjevo and is relatively accessible by car from the main town. Regular religious services take place throughout the year, so it is worth checking visiting times and allowing the nuns their space.

The grave of theologian and saint Justin Popović lies within the monastery grounds, marked by a simple stone cross according to his final wishes. This humble site draws visitors who appreciate his theological work and life.
