Spomenik borcima revolucije, War memorial in Valjevo, Serbia
The Monument to the Fighters of the Revolution is an aluminum structure on Vidrak Hill on the edge of Valjevo, Serbia. It was made by sculptor Vojin Bakic and takes the form of two raised arms, giving it a recognizable silhouette against the sky.
The monument was unveiled in 1960 to honor Stevan Filipovic and other partisans who fought against the German occupation in this part of Serbia. Filipovic was executed by German forces in Valjevo and became one of the most recognized symbols of wartime resistance in the country.
The site sits on Vidrak Hill above Valjevo and draws visitors who come to remember Stevan Filipovic, whose execution took place nearby. The surrounding area is wooded and quiet, making the metal structure stand out against the treetops when approached from below.
The monument is reached via Poparski Put street and sits on a hill, so some uphill walking is involved to get to it. The view over Valjevo from the top is wide and clear, which makes the walk worthwhile regardless of the visit itself.
The shape of the monument was taken directly from a photograph of Stevan Filipovic raising both arms during his final speech before he was hanged in 1942. That photograph was widely published and the sculptor used it as the starting point for the entire form.
