Vushtrri Castle, Medieval fortress in Vushtrri, Kosovo.
Vushtrri Castle is a medieval fortress in the town of Vushtrri, in present-day Kosovo, built around a central stone tower with very thick walls. The remaining sections of wall stand on a low rise and are clearly visible from the town below.
The castle was built in the medieval period and became the seat of a powerful regional ruler who controlled the surrounding territory. After that period of power ended, the fortress gradually fell out of use and parts of it were destroyed over the following centuries.
The fortress served as a center of power for regional rulers and represented their control over the surrounding lands. Its imposing structure communicated strength and authority to those who approached it.
The site sits in the center of Vushtrri and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of town. Wear sturdy shoes, as the ground around the remains can be uneven.
The castle has no underground chambers or tunnels, which is unusual for a medieval fortress of this size. This means everything about the structure was meant to be seen, with nothing hidden below ground.
