Church of St. Nicholas, Kuršumlija

The stone church features a characteristic brick facade with alternating rows of indented bricks covered in mortar and oak wood doors rotating on metal axles.

Stefan Nemanja, the Grand Prince of Serbia, constructed this religious complex between 1159 and 1166, establishing it as one of the earliest Nemanjić dynasty monasteries.

The church building contains fragments of 14th-century frescoes depicting a bishop and the Virgin in the window dome and south tower chapel.

The National Museum in Belgrade initiated restoration efforts in 1910, with ongoing reconstruction projects continuing through 2003 to preserve the structure.

The city name Kuršumlija derives from Turkish 'kurşunlu kilise', referring to the lead-covered church roof that Ottomans later used for making bullets.
