Sremska Mitrovica necropolis, Memorial cemetery in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia
The Sremska Mitrovica necropolis is a memorial cemetery featuring a 7 meter (23 foot) tall bronze urn as its central element, surrounded by six burial mounds arranged in a star-shaped layout. Bronze flame sculptures top each mound, creating a symmetric design across the grounds.
The memorial was completed in 1960 and honors around 12,000 victims who were executed during World War II. Architect Bogdan Bogdanović designed this site as a place of remembrance for those losses.
The memorial site displays inscribed panels that document victims and historical moments, while sculptures throughout the grounds represent different regions. Walking through, visitors encounter names and symbols that speak to the diverse communities affected.
The site is easy to walk through, with clear paths connecting the central urn and surrounding mounds. Plan time to move at a leisurely pace between structures and read the inscriptions thoughtfully.
The bronze flames atop each mound were originally designed to represent the six republics of former Yugoslavia, each with its own symbolic meaning. Two additional mounds were added in 1979, expanding the memorial's representation beyond its original design.
