Petrus

Petrus is a fortress ruin perched on a hill near the village of Zabrega northeast of Parachin. The site is surrounded by the Crnica river on three sides and protected by an artificial moat on its western edge.

The fortress was built in the 14th century as a border defense center under Emperor Dusan. It remained inhabited into the early 15th century before falling under Ottoman control.

The fortress served as a watchtower in the region's medieval defense network. From the hilltop, visitors today can survey the surrounding lands much as the soldiers once did.

The ruins sit about 11 kilometers northeast of Parachin and can be reached by hiking up the hill. The path is somewhat overgrown, so sturdy footwear and time to explore carefully are recommended.

The last recorded military action at this site occurred in 1413 when an Ottoman commander captured the fortress. This final battle marked the end of an era of medieval border defense in the region.
