Chelyabinsk

This is the seventh largest city in Russia, sitting on the eastern slope of the Urals and stretching along the Miass River with sprawling industrial zones, residential quarters, and factory grounds. Seven administrative districts divide the urban area, dominated by steel mills, machine plants, and multistory apartment blocks.

The Russian military founded a fortress on the Miass in 1736, which became a major hub for tank production and armament industry during World War II. Many factories relocated here from the European part of the Soviet Union to protect them from German occupation.

The regional museum holds collections about local minerals, Bashkir crafts, and the growth of heavy industry over several centuries. Residents spend free time along the Miass River, where parks and riverfront paths offer places to walk and rest.

The city runs an extensive network of buses, trolleybuses, and trams that link the seven districts through roughly 40 routes. Winters bring temperatures well below freezing, so warm clothing and winter boots are necessary.

A meteorite exploded over the city in February 2013, creating a shockwave that shattered thousands of windows and damaged buildings across a wide radius. Fragments of the meteorite were later recovered from the frozen Lake Chebarkul and can be seen at the regional museum.
