Chelyabinsk Oblast, Federal administrative division in Ural Mountains, Russia.
This administrative division in the Uralmountains ranges from high ridges to flatter terrain with forests, river systems, and scattered protected areas that shape the natural landscape. The region sits along the border with Kazakhstan and connects European territories to more eastern areas of Russia.
The territory was opened under tsarist rule and served as military outposts to help control the borderlands of the southern Urals. During the second world war the region became a heavy industry center supplying vehicles and metal for the war effort.
The name comes from a Turkic language spoken by early inhabitants of the southern Urals and later adopted for the main fortress in the area. Today industrial cities like Magnitogorsk shape local life with working-class neighborhoods located near cultural facilities and parks.
Visitors can arrive by car or train using major routes from western parts across the region. The area is heavily forested so appropriate clothing for outdoor activities helps when exploring natural sites.
In 2013 a meteor exploded in the atmosphere above this area, creating a shock wave that damaged structures in several towns. The event drew scientific attention to the collection of fragments, some of which ended up in local museums.
