Uvildy

Uvildy is a lake in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, covering 68 square kilometers (26 square miles) and divided into three sections by a chain of islands. Around 50 islands form natural dividers across the water, creating smaller bays and passages between the lake sections.

The lake formed after the last ice age through tectonic movements in the Southern Urals, with its basin shaped over thousands of years. Official recognition as a natural monument came in the 20th century to protect the water from overdevelopment and pollution.

The name comes from the Bashkir language and means "hollow-shaped", referring to the basin form of the lake bed. Local families return to the same shoreline spots each summer for fishing outings and lakeside picnics, following patterns passed down through generations.

Several access paths lead to the shore, and swimming, boating, and fishing are possible during warm months. The islands are mostly within sight, but caution is needed when going out on the water as weather conditions can shift quickly.

The elevation of 273 meters (896 feet) above sea level influences the water temperature and clarity, allowing certain plant and fish species to thrive here. In summer, the water reaches comfortable swimming temperatures in shallow shore areas, while deeper sections between the islands remain noticeably cooler.
