Gora Yurma, Mountain summit in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia
Gora Yurma is a mountain summit in the Southern Urals, located in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, rising above 1,000 meters. It sits at the northern edge of Taganay National Park, with forested slopes leading up to a rocky, open top.
The mountain was mapped in the 19th century during Russian Empire surveys focused on the mineral wealth of the Urals. Later, the creation of Taganay National Park in 1991 brought the area under formal protection and opened it to organized hiking.
The name Yurma comes from the Bashkir language and roughly translates to 'do not go there', a warning that locals once associated with the difficulty of the terrain. Today hikers from across the Ural region come here on weekends, and the summit trail is a common choice for those seeking a full-day walk in the mountains.
The summit is most easily reached on foot from the town of Zlatoust, with trails passing through Taganay National Park on the way up. Weather on the top changes quickly, so starting early in the day gives you the best chance of clear conditions.
Near the top, there are quartzite rock formations that locals call 'stone teeth', which are visible from a distance and serve as natural landmarks on the approach. The rock here is among the oldest in the entire Ural range, formed hundreds of millions of years ago.
