Lipetsk extends along both banks of the Voronezh River, containing four main districts and functioning as the administrative center of Lipetsk Oblast region.
Peter I the Great established Lipetsk in 1703 as an iron production site, strategically positioned near iron ore deposits for manufacturing artillery shells.
The Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, constructed between 1791 and 1803, represents the architectural heritage of Lipetsk as the tallest religious structure.
Local transportation includes an extensive network of trams, trolleybuses, and regular buses, connecting all major districts of the city.
The city maintains mineral springs and peat mud facilities that have operated as medical treatment centers since 1805.
