Old church of the Dormition, Eastern Orthodox monastery in Lipetsk, Russia
The Old Church of the Dormition is a Russian Orthodox monastery on Saltykov-Shchedrin Street in Lipetsk, listed as a federal cultural heritage site. The building follows a classic Orthodox layout with a central dome, whitewashed walls, and decorative detailing across the facades.
The monastery was founded in the late 1600s, making it one of the earliest religious buildings in the Lipetsk area. In 1764, Catherine the Great's church reforms dissolved many monasteries across Russia, and this one was among those that lost its monastic status.
The church is named after the Dormition, a feast that marks the passing of the Virgin Mary in Orthodox tradition. Visitors attending a service today will hear chants in Church Slavonic, the old liturgical language still used in Russian Orthodox worship.
The church is open throughout the year and operates as an active place of worship, so visitors are expected to dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees. Going outside peak service times gives more space to look around the interior without disturbing worshippers.
Although the monastery was dissolved in 1764, the building continued to serve as a parish church rather than being demolished or repurposed for secular use. This makes it unusual compared to many dissolved monasteries in Russia, which were converted into warehouses or prisons.
