Snake Island, Black Sea islet near Danube Delta, Ukraine.
Snake Island is a rocky outcrop in the Black Sea, roughly 35 kilometers east of the Danube Delta mouth. The formation consists of sedimentary stone, its cliffs rising steeply from the water and giving the islet a sharp outline.
The island changed hands multiple times between Ottoman, Russian and Romanian control before becoming part of the Soviet Union in 1948. After Ukrainian independence it remained under Kyiv administration and became the subject of an international court case over maritime borders with Romania in 2009.
The tiny islet has no permanent residents, only a rotating garrison of border guards who live there for limited periods. Their presence shapes daily life on the rock, where military facilities occupy all available space.
The island lies far out in open water and is not accessible to ordinary travelers. Boats from Vylkove or other Danube towns do not sail there because the entire area is closed to civilians.
The Greek name Leuke likely refers to the white droppings of seabirds that once covered the rock. Old maps also show a small lighthouse that stood on the highest point as early as the 19th century.
