Livny

Livny is a district town in Oryol Oblast that runs along the Livenka River and is surrounded by fields and forests. The streets run parallel to the water and connect several neighborhoods with low residential buildings, schools, and individual brick administrative buildings.

The fortress of Ust-Livny was established in 1586 as a wooden border post to protect Moscow from raids from the south. Over the centuries, the settlement grew into a trading town and lost its military importance after the expansion of the tsarist empire.

The town takes its name from the Livenka River, along whose banks the earliest settlements grew and where parks and pathways now run. Residents often gather at the market square, where traders sell regional produce and smaller festivals take place on weekends.

Buses connect the town regularly with Oryol and other places in the area, while the train station offers services toward the regional capital. In the center you will find shops and cafes that are open during the day and are good for resting after a walk.

A tall communications tower from 1979 transmits radio and television signals across the entire region and serves as a landmark for pilots. The structure reaches a height that makes it the tallest building in the area.
