Zlatoust, Industrial city in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia
Zlatoust is a city in the central Ural Mountains situated in a narrow mountain valley on both banks of the Ai River. It spreads over several kilometers through the mountains with different residential, factory, and industrial sectors.
An iron and copper foundry established in 1754 laid the foundation for the settlement, which later grew into a major metalworking center. The industrial expansion of the 19th century and war demands of the 20th century drove further growth.
The city takes its name from Saint John Chrysostom, an early Christian figure whose Greek epithet means golden mouth. Local craftspeople continue the tradition of metal engraving, with intricate knives and decorative items visible in specialty shops throughout the center.
The climate is continental with significant temperature swings year-round, so dress accordingly for the season when you visit. The most notable architecture and monuments are found along the main street in the city center, which is easy to explore on foot.
During World War II, the narrow river valley forced Soviet planners to expand the city horizontally along the valley floor rather than vertically. Today about 11 kilometers of paved roads connect the older and newer sections, forming a single extended structure.
