Magnitogorsk Urban Okrug

Magnitogorsk is an urban district in Chelyabinsk Oblast on both sides of the Ural River at 370 meters (1,210 feet) elevation. The settlement runs along the river, which here forms the natural border between two continents.

Soviet authorities began building a steel mill in 1929, transforming the region from farmland into a center of heavy industry. The facility rose beside Mount Magnitnaya because of the rich iron ore deposits in this area.

The Ural River runs through the center, marking the point where two continents meet. Residents can walk between Europe and Asia from one bridge to another, an experience that feels ordinary in this city.

An international airport, railway lines, and a network of trams and buses connect the district with other regions. Visitors can use the bridges over the river to move between both banks.

Mount Magnitnaya originally held iron ore with a concentration between 55 and 60 percent. This exceptionally high concentration was the main reason for establishing industry at this location.
