Angarsk, Industrial center in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia.
Angarsk is a large city in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, that stretches along the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The city lies in the Kitoy River valley at about 425 meters (1400 feet) elevation and spreads over several kilometers.
The city began in 1948 as an industrial settlement and gained city status in 1951. Over the following decades it grew with petrochemical plants into an important center for the oil industry.
The clock museum displays timepieces from several centuries and shows how mechanical precision mattered to the region. Visitors can see pieces from Russian, German and Swiss makers there.
Trams, buses and shared taxis link the residential areas with the industrial zones and the train station. Public transport runs regularly during the day but services thin out in the evening hours.
The petrochemical complex processes crude oil from West Siberian fields that is pumped here through pipelines. The raw material is turned into synthetic fibers and fertilizers for agricultural operations.
