Puchezh, town in Russia
Puchezh is a small town on the Volga River in Russia's Ivanovo region. It has a compact center with streets leading down to the riverbank and simple buildings from the 18th century that reflect the life of earlier residents.
The town began in the 17th century as a small settlement and later grew into a trade center for river workers and cloth makers. In the mid-20th century, the construction of the Gorky dam fundamentally changed the townscape when rising water flooded the old center and forced the community to rebuild on higher ground.
The town is known for its linen and embroidery crafts that have been passed down through local families for generations. You can see this tradition alive in workshops where artisans create detailed patterns on cloth sold throughout the community.
The town is best reached by car or train. From Shuya train station you can take a bus or taxi for the final leg of about 18 miles (30 km), which takes roughly half an hour.
A giant meteorite crater called Puchezh-Katunsky lies about 60 km south of the town. With a diameter of about 80 km, it formed nearly 200 million years ago and remains a quiet reminder of Earth's deep past that few visitors discover.
