Uryupinsk, Provincial center in Volgograd Oblast, Russia.
Uryupinsk is a town on the left bank of the Khopyor River in the northern part of Volgograd Oblast. The settlement spreads over several low hills and is surrounded by fields and meadows, while the center develops along the main street.
The place began in 1618 as a border guard post in the Russian Empire and later grew into a Cossack settlement along the river. In 1929, the former stanita received town status through a decision by the central government.
Locals keep alive the tradition of working with goat down, a craft passed through generations and still practiced in small workshops today. Visitors can discover the handmade scarves and socks at the local market, where artisans are happy to explain their technique.
The town is reached through the railway station Uryupino, which connects to other cities in the region. The center is easy to walk through, while shops and services concentrate along the main street.
The place carries the unofficial nickname capital of warmth due to its role in producing warming textiles from goat down. Winters here can still become extremely cold, with temperatures occasionally reaching minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 Fahrenheit).
