Svetlogorsk, Baltic Sea resort town in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia
Svetlogorsk is a coastal town on the Baltic Sea in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. The settlement extends across several levels between the beach promenade and forested heights with villas from German times.
The village founded by Sambian fishermen in 1258 as Ruse-moter developed into a German beach resort called Rauschen. After World War II, the town passed to Russia in 1947 and received the name Svetlogorsk.
The Water Tower from the early 20th century stands in the town center and now serves as a viewing platform and sundial. The building shows the architecture of the German spa period that still shapes the town's appearance today.
A cable car connects the beach area with the upper town level and covers the elevation difference of about 40 meters (130 feet). Most paths in the upper section run through pine forests with regular branches leading to viewpoints.
The town is the only Russian member in the international Cittaslow network that promotes quality of life in smaller communities. This membership reflects in the widespread green spaces and the calm building structure.
