Severomorsk, Military port in Murmansk Oblast, Russia
Severomorsk is a military port in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, stretching along the coast of Kola Bay. The settlement sits on subpolar ground with low wooden buildings and some multistory concrete complexes between rocky hills.
The settlement began in 1896 as Vayenga, derived from the Sami word for female reindeer. It was renamed Severomorsk in 1951 and granted town status as headquarters of the Northern Fleet.
Several monuments around town reflect decades under a Soviet naval base, deeply woven into residents' lives. Churches and memorials offer spaces today for devotion and remembrance of the sea.
Entry requires a special permit because the area is closed as a military zone. Those who gain access should bring warm clothing, as winters are long and cold and summers remain cool.
A dry dock on the Kola Peninsula serves the maintenance of large ships in the north. Visitors sometimes see submarines and surface vessels lying in the bay from viewpoints.
