Kondopoga, Industrial town in Republic of Karelia, Russia
Kondopoga is a town in the Republic of Karelia along a bay of Lake Onega, around 55 kilometers north of Petrozavodsk. The settlement spreads along the waterfront, with main roads linking modest residential blocks and industrial buildings near the shore.
Written records from 1563 mention a small settlement along this stretch of Lake Onega. The place grew later through local marble deposits and the construction of a paper mill during the 20th century.
The town features the wooden Dormition Church from 1774, which represented traditional Russian architectural techniques until its destruction by fire in 2018.
The railway line between Moscow and Murmansk connects the town with larger cities in northern Russia and offers regional links. Travelers find basic lodging and a few shops in the center, especially useful when exploring the Karelian backcountry.
The nearby waterfall on the Suna River lies inside a nature reserve that draws hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Paper processing drives much of the local economy and shapes daily life for many residents.
