Dormition Church, Kondopoga, Orthodox wooden church in Kondopoga, Russia
The Dormition Church was a wooden structure rising about 42 meters tall on a narrow peninsula jutting into Lake Onega. It featured a multi-tiered design with octagonal sections crowned by a tent-shaped roof.
Built in 1774, the church replaced three earlier structures on the same site. A catastrophic fire in August 2018 destroyed the entire building completely.
The interior held a baroque iconostasis and painted ceiling showing the Divine Liturgy, reflecting Russian Orthodox artistic traditions. Pilgrims and worshippers experienced these religious artworks as expressions of Orthodox faith and local spiritual life.
The church sat along the shoreline where lake vessels could spot it easily. Its bell tower, built between 1829 and 1831, also served as a lighthouse to guide navigation on the water.
The wooden structure was designed using precise mathematical proportions where the tent roof height, tower, and width maintained a one-to-two ratio. This careful proportioning made the building appear balanced and harmonious from every angle.
