Kivach waterfall

Kivach waterfall is a natural cascade on the Suna River set within the Karelian taiga forest. The water drops over dark rocky ledges and is surrounded by thick forest that fills much of the northern landscape.

The nature reserve was established in 1931 to protect the area. During the 1930s, authorities modified the water flow to help power a nearby hydroelectric station, changing the landscape.

The name Kivach comes from the Karelian language and means flowing water. The area around the waterfall has long held meaning for local people as a place to experience the wild northern landscape.

Visitors can explore the area through walking trails that also lead to a nature museum. Wear proper footwear since trails pass through damp ground and over rocky sections.

The waterfall drops over an ancient dark rock formation that is over two billion years old. This ancient geological base gives the area a distinctive look that sets it apart from other forests nearby.
