Peresvet, town in Sergiyevo-Posadsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia
Peresvet is a small town in Moscow Region situated along the Kunye River and surrounded by forests and marshland. It features simple brick buildings and neat streets creating a quiet setting, with several nearby villages and a location about 81 kilometers from Moscow.
Established in 1948 as a workers settlement called Novostroika, the town was built to support rocket and space technology development and testing. It became an official town in 2000 and maintains its deep connection to early space exploration, having contributed to the first satellite launch and Yuri Gagarin's historic spaceflight.
The town is named after Alexander Peresvet, a legendary warrior from the Battle of Kulikovo, and residents honor this connection through local monuments and reliefs depicting military deeds. This reflects how the community maintains its link to Russian historical traditions and values.
Summer and early fall are the best times to visit when weather is mild and walking in surrounding forests is comfortable. Winter brings cold conditions with temperatures dropping below minus 24 degrees Celsius, which can affect accessibility, though snow activities become possible during this period.
The Square of Defenders of the Fatherland opened in 2019 and features reliefs depicting Russian soldiers and their brave acts, alongside a statue of Alexander Peresvet by sculptor Innokentiy Komochkin. This newly created space links the town's military heritage with its space exploration legacy.
