Poronaysk, Port city in Sakhalin Oblast, Russia
Poronaysk is a port city situated on Terpeniya Bay of the Sea of Okhotsk on Sakhalin Island's eastern coast. The harbor with its docks and storage areas forms the center of town, while residential neighborhoods spread behind it.
Founded in 1869 as a Russian outpost called Tikhmenevsky, the settlement was renamed Shisuka during Japanese occupation. Soviet forces took control in 1945 and the town received its current name.
The name Poronaysk comes from the Ainu language and means broad river, reflecting the original inhabitants of the island. Walking through town, you notice the mix of old wooden buildings and Soviet-era structures that shape its character.
Visitors should prepare for cool, damp weather as the area frequently deals with fog. The best time to visit is during the short warmer months from June through September when conditions are milder.
The city experiences between 150 and 230 days of fog annually, making it one of the foggiest places in the region. This extreme moisture has shaped how residents and visitors perceive and move through the town.
