Juditten Church, Gothic Orthodox church in Mendeleyevo district, Kaliningrad, Russia.
Juditten Church is a Gothic brick building with a clock tower connected to the nave through a barrel-vaulted vestibule. The structure displays Gothic architectural features throughout and serves today as the main religious center of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Convent.
The church was built between 1276 and 1298 by the Teutonic Order as a Catholic place of worship. It changed to the Lutheran faith in 1526 following the establishment of the Duchy of Prussia.
The church is named after Saint Judith and displays frescoes inside showing biblical scenes, the lives of Jesus and Mary, and the Apostles. These paintings give visitors a sense of how religious stories were told through art in this space.
The building is now consecrated again and functions as an active place of worship for the convent. Visitors should be aware this is a sacred space where religious practices take place.
The building once housed a large wooden Madonna and Child sculpture that was moved here from Königsberg Cathedral. This statue was displayed there after its original pearls were stolen during the Thirteen Years' War.
