Snezhinsk, Nuclear research center in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia.
Snezhinsk is a settlement in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, located on a plateau at the foothills of the Urals and containing institutes alongside residential quarters. The site covers a restricted area defined by security zones and checkpoints.
The settlement was founded in 1957 as a secret research facility and initially carried the code name Chelyabinsk-70 before receiving its current name in 1993. During Soviet times, the location did not appear on public maps and remained classified until the end of the Cold War.
The residential areas incorporate Soviet architectural designs with scientific facilities, reflecting the city's role in national research programs.
Access requires a special permit that takes several weeks to obtain and is granted only under specific conditions. Visitors must register their arrival in advance and will be checked by security staff at the entrance.
The city takes its name from a nearby lake whose waters were once described as snowmelt due to their clarity. To this day, the site remains partially obscured or shown in low resolution on commercial satellite imagery.
