Kimmerikon, Archaeological site in Kerch Peninsula, Crimea.
Kimmerikon is an ancient settlement on the Kerch Peninsula coast with remains of stone foundations, walls, and defensive structures scattered across the site. Excavations have uncovered pottery, coins, and building elements that show what daily life was like in this place.
Greek colonists founded this settlement in the 5th century BCE as a strategic port for trade between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Its location at this maritime crossroads made it an important hub for goods and ideas to move through.
The settlement shows how Greek settlers and local populations lived together and shared their knowledge. This mixing is visible in the building styles and objects that were found here.
The site is reachable by the coastal road from Kerch city, and guided tours are offered during the warmer months. It is good to bring water and wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking on open ground.
The site has a rare ancient water system with ceramic pipes that brought fresh water from mountain springs to where people lived. This piping shows the practical knowledge and building skills of the early residents.
