Popov Island, Protected island in Peter the Great Gulf, Russia.
Popov Island is a protected island in Peter the Great Gulf, in Primorsky Krai, Russia. Its shoreline alternates between sandy beaches, sea caves, and rock formations that shape the coast on different sides of the island.
The island was named after Admiral Andrey Alexandrovich Popov, who commanded the Russian Pacific fleet in the 19th century. In the early 20th century, military fortifications were built here to guard the sea routes leading to Vladivostok.
The island has a nature museum where visitors can see local marine species and plants from the Sea of Japan up close. Along the shore, fishermen work quietly and small boats anchor in the sheltered coves, giving the place a slow, working rhythm.
The island is reached by ferry from the mainland, and crossing times can vary depending on sea conditions and weather. If you plan to walk along the coast, bring sturdy footwear as the terrain can be uneven in places.
Although the island is a nature reserve, two small settlements are permanently inhabited year-round, which is unusual for a protected area of this kind. This means visitors share the island with local residents who live alongside the wildlife and the sea.
