Russky Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Vladivostok, Russia
Russky Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in Vladivostok that stretches across the strait between the mainland and the offshore island. The two main pylons rise high into the air and carry steel cables that support the deck over a span of more than one kilometer.
Work began in 2008 and ended shortly before an international conference in summer 2012. The structure was built at a time when the city was preparing its role as host for larger regional gatherings.
The name refers to the nearby island and recalls how this crossing links the port city with the campus of the Far Eastern University. Each day cars and buses pass over it while people watch harbor traffic moving underneath from the edges.
The crossing allows four lanes and offers enough room for cars and buses that travel daily between the mainland and the island. Underneath the structure there is enough clearance for larger ships to pass through the strait without difficulty.
During construction engineers had to apply techniques that accounted for extreme winter cold when the thermometer can drop far below zero. The longest steel cables reach over several hundred meters and keep the structure stable even in strong wind.
